What is Kriya Yoga?

Kriya is a technique of energy control, or pranayama. It is also a comprehensive spiritual path, which includes additional meditation practices, right living, and a link to the enlightened Masters mentioned in Autobiography of a Yogi.

Kriya Yoga quickly accelerates one’s spiritual growth. It was first made widely known by Paramhansa Yogananda in his Autobiography of a Yogi. According to Yogananda, Kriya is the most effective technique available to mankind today for reaching the goal of Yoga: union with the Divine.

“Practice Kriya night and day. It is the greatest key to salvation. Other people go by books and lesser practices, but it will take them incarnations to reach God.
Kriya is not only, as I’ve often said, the airplane route to Him, but also the greatest way of destroying present temptation. When you feel that joy within, no evil will be able to touch you. To you, sense pleasures will then seem like stale cheese compared to the nectar of God’s joy.”

The Path of Kriya Yoga Classes

Paramhansa Yogananda taught Kriya Yoga as a spiritual path that includes three other techniques, along with discipleship to the Kriya line of Masters.

The Kriya technique is not a “magic bullet” that will give one instant spiritual progress. It is effective only to the extent that the Kriya yogi practices it with awareness, sensitivity, and an open heart.

Ananda teaches the four techniques that encompass the Path of Kriya, just as Yogananda taught them: the Energization Exercises; the Hong-Sau Technique of Concentration; the Aum Technique of Meditation; and the Kriya technique. After establishing the first three techniques as part of a daily meditation practice, one can receive the Kriya technique. This process takes about 10 months, or more, depending on the student.

Classes, graded over four levels, that take the aspiring student through each of these aspects are offered by Ananda Sangha teachers periodically. At the end of such a class series, the student is offered Kriya Yoga initiation.

LEVEL 1: Lessons in Meditation

The  “Level 1” class is offered as an introduction to the Kriya Yoga lessons as taught by Paramhansa Yogananda ; it is structured as follows:
Contents: The key ingredients of this class would be :
  • the Hong-Sau technique of Meditation that Paramhansa Yogananda gave as a pre-requisite to Kriya Yoga.
  • the principles of Energy flow in the body and introduction to the Energization Exercises that Paramhansa Yogananda taught to recharge the body-battery.
Other topics include: Ananda: history and spiritual lineage; what is meditation; the benefits of Meditation; Correct meditative posture; How God is experienced – the eight aspects of God. Review of Hong-Sau with a guided Meditation; Role of Prayer, Devotion, and Chanting; Principles of Energy, Will and Magnetism; Q&A.

LEVEL 2: Raja Yoga

Each of the five level 2 classes will involve a guided Hong-Sau meditation with Q&A. We will also progressively cover the 39 Energization Exercises taught by Paramhansa Yogananda with guided practice at each class.

The five classes will also give the students a thorough grounding in Raja Yoga as expounded by Paramhansa Yogananda. Specific topics that will tentatively be covered in the five classes are:
